A study by the Infront Webworks revealed that 95% of people rely on first page results for search results to fond information with only 5% proceeding to check the subsequent pages. There are numerous businesses in the same niche as your competing to get on the first page. Aside from writing high-quality content that is relevant to your audience, optimizing your content for search engines increases its visibility on the search engines.

According to the Stat Counter Global statistics, between March 2017 and April 2018, Google had the highest search engine market share worldwide taking 90.62% of the market share.  Furthermore, Internet Live Stats shows that out of approximately 3.9 billion internet users worldwide, about 2.7  billion users access Google daily.

Seeing the popularity of Google worldwide, this article will focus on ways to increase your website’s visibility on Google.

  1. Create attention-grabbing headlines

Your content’s headline is the first thing your audience see, and they use it to judge whether or not they should proceed to read the post. A good headline should give your audience a sense of what the post is about and entice them to proceed to read it.

Ensure to use a keyword that is commonly searched within the headline. There are a number of tools available online to help you draft great headlines. My favorite is the free Hubspot headline generating tool where you enter your keyword(s) or topic, and it generates 5 possible titles.

  1. Improve your Google Ranking

Various factors come into play when Google is ranking your website. These include:

  • Your site’s speed.

Fast loading websites have a higher ranking than their slow-loading counterparts. Use Google’s page speed insight tool to test your website’s speed performance on both mobile and desktop platforms. It also provides you with tips to help you improve your website’s speed.

Use images when it is absolutely necessary and ensure they are a small size. For larger images, use the various online tools available to compress them. Ensure you host your website with a hosting service provider who is reputable for good uptime.

  • Content relevance

Once an internet user places a search request on Google, Google analyzes the words typed in and begins crawling to find relevant information. Aim to create relevant content for your target audience.

  • Backlinks

Backlinks are links on other websites that point back to your website. They signal to Google that your website is trustworthy and offers valuable content that other website owners use for reference.

Each backlink serves as a vote of confidence from other websites and the more backlinks your website has the more votes it receives and the better its Google ranking.

There are two main approaches for generating backlinks. One, you could reach out to other bloggers and content creators and ask them to feature your links in their content. Alternatively, identify where your target audience hangouts and reach out to the website owners seeking an opportunity to publish a guest post on their website. On the guest post, ensure to incorporate backlinks to your website.

  1. Sign up on Google+

Many business people do not consider Google+ an important social media tool. Yet, Google+ can be a tool to quickly boost your visibility on Google search results. There is a direct link between Google+ and Google search engine.

Upon registration on Google plus, you will be required to verify your business. Once you have completed the verification process, it signals to Google that your business is official. When you post on Google+, the status will be indexed on Google search engine so that it comes up for relevant searches. Google+ plus is especially essential for businesses with a physical location as it shows your contact and location information.

  1. Register with Google Console

Google search console, previously known as the Webmaster, is a free tool offered by Google where you submit your website for indexing. Submitting your website to the Google console, lets Google know that your website exists so that when it is crawling in search of relevant results for a given search, it considers your website.

In addition, Google console serves as a valuable tool for checking backlinks on your website, troubleshooting Google crawling problems, lets Google know if your website is available in different versions for different countries, and lets you see what kind of searches drive traffic to your website.

  1. Integrate SEO in your content strategy

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is a complex and multifaceted strategy for increasing search engine results visibility. While SEO rules are constantly changing, there are certain elements that have been a constant. The primary driver of SEO is using keywords appropriately.

SEO experts recommend that:

  1. Carry out keyword research to identify the commonly searched keywords for the topic you want to write about.
  2. Incorporate the keyword in your post title and subheadings.
  3. Create a meta description that incorporates the keywords. A meta description summarizes what your post is about. It will appear as the short paragraph accompanying your post title on the search results. If you do not create a meta description, Google features a section of your post that contains the keyword queried. Creating a meta description gives you the control over what your audience sees when your content comes up in the search results.
  4. Incorporate keywords and their derivatives in the body of your content. The keywords should naturally fit in the context of your article without affecting its flow. Avoid keyword stuffing as it will get you penalized by Google. Remember, your primary responsibility is offering the target audience valuable content and use of keywords should enhance that and not be an obstacle.
  5. Edit your search URL for the page that the content is hosted to include the keyword your post is about.

I wish there were a magic button that website owners and content marketer could use to get their website on the first page of Google search results, but there is none. Visibility on Google search results takes dedication, consistency, and persistence. The Google algorithm keeps changing, therefore, you need to be on the lookout for those changes and adapt your strategy accordingly.
